We got into New York. I was in my apartment by 11 p.m. Tom brought my bags up, and we kissed goodbye. As shaken as I was, I needed a night by myself to recalibrate to normalcy…whatever that now meant.

Tom had an 8 a.m. practice, and I needed to be at the office by 7 a.m. We both agreed a night of good rest might be healthy for us both.

Before he left, he gave me another one of his kisses. He pulled me into his strong arms and made me feel, once again, that I was all he cared about...all he needed...all he craved.

After he left, I tried to sleep and filtered in and out of consciousness all night. I dreamed of Tom as a little boy, scared and alone. I dreamed of the sex we shared. I dreamed of what life could be like as Tom’s wife.

Then I dreamed I lost him.

At 4 a.m., I decided to go to the gym in my building and worked out hard. Sweat was pouring out of me when my neighbor Tiffany walked in.

“Damn, girl, how long have you been here?” She grinned at me.

“Since four.”

“Does this have anything to do with your hot new hunk?” Tiffany gave me a knowing smile.

I jerked my head. “What are you talking about?”

Tiffany’s face changed. “Liv, have you not seen the papers?”

Oh crap. We hadn’t left the house for two days. My face heated at the thought of all the positions we had been in over those two days.

“Liv?”

“No, I haven’t. Why? What do they say?”

“Well, there were some pretty hot pics of you and your man, including a pretty intense-looking kiss on a dance floor…and damn, that dress…wow!”

“Thanks, girl. Sorry, but I have to go.” All I could think about was getting my hands on those newspapers.

I arrived at my office at half-past six to find a neat stack of newspapers and magazines on my desk. Meg, being Meg, took the initiative to buy all the articles she could find featuring Tom and me. She wasn’t in the office yet, but I knew her handiwork.

My desk was full of at least a dozen papers and magazines. Tom and I were on the front of every single one.

Wow. Tom was right about the media eating this up. The headlines were interesting.
